Dreamy 2017 Swimwear Trends
Luxurious Poolside Looks to Cozy Up to
By Christine G. Adamo
Women’s Wear Daily—industry watchdog of the Ready-to-Wear set—cites embroidered details as sure to make a splash this Fall. WWD says special touches like these make it a breeze to strike a balance between the “tough and whimsical” sides of our personalities. But, why wait? As Spring and swim seasons kick into full swing, get ahead of that curve by embracing a bevy of related trends in poolside fashions and resort wear.
I even help get you started with a list of top picks below. These pieces call your inner celebrity to the surface, making your fabulousness known wherever you go. That’s true whether you plan to spend time lounging around your own private swimming pool or to make a slash, as you elegantly sashay your way across the deck of a newly christened ocean liner. All the while your Dolphin automatic pool cleaner will do the heavy lifting for you, as it’s designed to!
Spring/Summer 2017 Swimwear Trends
A quick confession: I’m not the most vocal Bloomingdales devotee, but I have fallen hard for the retailer’s ability to sum up the year’s hautest Spring and Summer resort, travel and home swimming pool looks. Looks that demand a double take and put you in command of more than just a pool cleaning robot—life saver though it may be.
This season’s best bikinis, one pieces and cover ups are bursting with color, drenched in architectural details and take “flirty” to a whole new level. As WWD noted, in lauding embroidered details, upcoming options in patterns and stitching pay homage to florals, tribal influences and southwestern prints. Which means this year? When it comes to bathing suits and other hot garb, there’s room to be romantic (think: dainty crochet work or ruffles) and uninhibited. Come hither, if you prefer.
(3) Categories of Cool to Choose From
To make things easier, let’s establish a few guidelines. First, use that handy MyDolphinTM app to set your little robot in motion. Then step away from the pool water. I promise you that, by the time you’re done reading, the energy-saving wiz will have begun scrubbing clean every surface of your pool—leaving more time for online shopping! Now we can get down to business.
Whether you anticipate taking a long-awaited trip with your family this Spring or are eager for Summer to be in full swing, what you’ll find here is a collection of gotta-have-’em luxury pieces anyone who loves pools or water-based vacations won’t want to miss. Those chic pool wear recommendations fall into (3) distinct categories:
• Playful (Yet Practical) Resort Wear
• A Haute Bit of Midriff Coverage
• Over the Top—Literally!
I get it. Not everyone wants their goods on display. That’s why we’re starting off with mix ‘n’ match pieces that are playful—yet practical enough to conceal what your mama gave you. That’ll help whether you’re sunning, swimming or sitting down on the deck for a mid-afternoon convo with your favorite next door neighbor.
Playful (Yet Practical) Resort Wear
In keeping with this year’s emphasis on color and strategic cutouts, I present you with two specific options. These two-piece bikini pairings make moving around with ease and looking great while doing it totally possible. Among my favorite picks are J.Crew’s Stripe Halter Bikini Top ($52) and Stripe Surf Bikini Bottom ($44).
The top is sporty but sexy with darts and graduated blue-and-white striping that draws attention to the bust line without being overt. The bottom is, in essence, a bikini-style boy short that offers ample backside coverage and still looks youthful and flirty. This tan-enhancing color combo is especially easy on the eyes.
OK, this is where the mix ‘n’ match comes in. The L Space “Chloe” Wrap Bikini Top ($79) and “Estella” Bikini Bottom ($70) are a match made in heaven. Especially when you pair the coquettish Sky Blue top with soft bra straps set squarely on the shoulders with a black bottom, leveraging the cutout trend well.
A Haute Bit of Midriff Coverage
So many swimsuits, so little time. Scratch that! There’s no better time to buy a bathing suit with a bit of midriff coverage than 2017. Take Trina Turk’s “Algiers” V-Plunge One Piece ($140). Its gorgeous, criss-cross racerback offers nice support while a trio of straps upfront and subtle gold-bead detailing vamp up the look in sizes 4 thru 14.
Feeling blue? A nicely lined swimsuit will fix that! Embrace your love of denim tones in a Prairie Rose “Becca” Crochet One Piece ($124). In 88% nylon and 12% spandex with thoughtfully placed sheer crochet panels, it’s a piece you’ll want to shimmy into. A high, delicate neckline and back ties with playful tassels up the happy factor!
For the sexy show-off among us, I present the Blue Life “Boho” One Piece ($170). Its sweet, subtle nude and cream tie-dye print is to die for! As is the contrasting midnight lace detail which cradles the bust. Cut high on the hips—for an elongated, leggy look with a bit of cheek in back—it’s sure to look great with shorts, jeans or a skirt.
Over the Top—Literally!
If you’re craving ultimate luxe, it’s time to consider your options in Spring/Summer 2017 cover ups. My first pick? Emilio Pucci’s “Bermuda” Tropical-Print Silk Caftan ($1,040) in sunlit yellow, aqua and sandy pink tones. Made in Italy, this pullover features a flattering bateau neckline and cascading kimono-style sleeves.
Feeling playful? Opt for La Perla’s “Beyond the Beach” Silk Cady Playsuit ($1,210). Also made in Italy, this 100% ivory silk garment lets you showcase beautifully tanned shoulders and legs as it draws attention to your gorgeous face with its deftly cut neckline. An asymmetrical fastener adds just enough “tough” to balance out this whimsical look.
If color’s what you’re after, check out Missoni’s “Mare” Cold-Shoulder Cover-Up Dress ($1,220). Its two-toned coral and pink scallops suggest a hint of romance, while braided trim at the neckline, sleeves and hem give it a polished appearance. Its square-cut neck and back conceal bra straps and its trapeze silhouette suits most body types.
NEW ARRIVAL! (& Other Great Swimwear News)
There are a few more pieces I’d like to mention—though not all are in their first run. Diane von Furstenberg’s Floor Length Wrap Dress ($398) is a NEW ARRIVAL! worth dipping into. This kaftan-meets-wrap-dress in a Borel stripe print features a detachable, self-tie belt you can use to let it hang loose or tighten up as you snuggle in.
Another honorable mention is the Norma Kamali “Mio” One-Shoulder Printed One-Piece Swimsuit ($225). But, be warned: This isn’t your mama’s Norma Kamali. Made of nylon and spandex, it casts a classic silhouette against a one-shoulder neckline and high-cut sides with moderate coverage. Its collage-style, parrot print squawks “tropics.”
Remember that black L Space “Estella” Bikini Bottom I mentioned earlier? I’m dying to pair it with a Vitamin A “Cozumel” High-Neck Bikini Top. Previously $105, you can get it for $52.50 from Molly Brown (XS-XL).
No ordinary bikini top, its curve-hugging seams lie flat against the skin for a secure boost in bust measurement that’s unbelievable. Share a haute pick of your own here, on Instagram (#Maytronics_US) and on Twitter @MaytronicsUS.
